Gas Safety Compliance Certificate Explained

A gas compliance certificate, also known as a gas safety certificate, is an official document that verifies that a gas installation such as gas appliances, piping, and fittings meets the required safety standards, codes and regulations. It is typically issued by a qualified and licensed gas fitter or technician who holds a Gas Work Licence or Authorisation.

The certificate usually includes details of the inspection, any issues found, and the measures taken to rectify them, ensuring the installation is safe and compliant with relevant regulations

When is a Gas Compliance Certificate Required?

Gas compliance certificates are compulsory, therefore it's important that you check the qualifications of any gas fitter you enlist. Unregistered gas fitting work can have a range of issues not only for safety aspects but also from an insurance perspective.

This will include any new gas-related tasks, upgrades or renovations. Your entire gas system and appliances will be checked thoroughly to make sure they meet the required safety standards. A gas compliance certificate will prove you have had your gas installation carried out by a qualified and licensed professional.

  • Gas is connected to your building for the first time
  • Gas in your home or business is being is re-connected
  • A new gas appliance is installed including a hot water system, stove, cooktop, oven fireplace,
  • An existing gas appliance is replaced.

Importance of Having Your Gas Appliances Inspected?

Although it isn’t a regulatory requirement, having your gas appliances inspected and tested every 3-5 years is strongly recommended. This allows for any problems to be located before they can pose a potential danger. Additionally, this will give you peace of mind that your gas system meets safety compliance.

When you Receive Your Gas Safety Certificate

After a successful audit, you will receive a gas compliance certificate and a compliance plate. The plate is typically installed inside your electrical metre box. It's imperative that you submit a copy of the certificate to your gas supplier so they can legally supply gas cylinders to your property.
